The Gathering – A year of welcomes

Throughout 2013, Ireland will open its arms to friends and family from all over the world, inviting them home to locally organised gatherings in villages, towns and cities.

In keeping with the 'Gathering' events all over Ireland in 2013, FOL are planning a gathering in the Clarion Hotel in Cork on Saturday April 20th at 6.30pm. There will be a drinks reception and entertainment starting on the boardwalk and continuing through to dinner and DJ til late into the night. Continue reading >

Request for your input – FOL strategic planning process

FOL is currently developing its next Strategic Plan, to cover the period 2014 -2017. The development of this plan will enable FOL to clearly set its direction for the next few years, and then seek support and resources to deliver its programs on the ground. We are currently in the early stages of the planning process where we collect the input, ideas and perspectives from a range of stakeholders in Kenya, Ireland and around the world. We are very keen to hear from you, our supporters and volunteers and so invite you to complete this survey. Continue reading >

Irish presidency of the EU in 2013

The Irish presidency of the EU in 2013 provides the ideal platform to bolster Ireland's standing as a leader in Development, and offers the opportunity to provide leadership to the rest of the EU by carrying the torch for those in desperate poverty worldwide. By living up to its aid promises during the EU presidency, Ireland will fully embrace the spirit of its role as a leader in Europe and help to set the agenda for the years running up to the 2015 deadline. Honey, bee my valentine?!

FOL will be selling mini pots of honey this Valentines with the tag line 'Honey, Bee my valentine'. Each pot costs €3 and is packed in a pretty box with hearts and information inside about FOL. If you work somewhere that would be willing to take a tray of 20 pots for sale please get in contact with the FOL office. Your support would be much appreciated. The honey will be on sale in various locations around the Cork area and also from the office in Midleton if you would like to support the Kenyan communities and give something a little different for Valentines this year. Greetings from Londiani!

Where it is my privilege to be able to take 6 months sabbatical from my paid work in Australia, and spend the time in Londiani with FOL. When I first ventured here for a few days in 2007, after hearing about FOL for many years, I don't think I would ever have dreamed of the opportunity to come here and work with the team for an extended period. When I came that first time, I somehow was dragged into helping to prepare a report on all of FOL's activities at the time – which took quite some effort as the team was far too modest in sharing all they were doing. I was amazed at all that was being accomplished by this band of dedicated, committed and slightly mad folk who just got on and did things. Continue reading >

Alternative Rite of Passage (ARP)

The Alternative Rite of Passage is a 5 day course for girls who are at risk of female circumcision. The course provides information and discussion on health care, relationships, family & household, lifeskills as well as local traditions and cultural practice. The success of the programme rests with the fact that it is taken on by the whole community not just the girls and the course facilitators. Continue reading >
