News from FOL Kenya
Things are really happening in FOL Kenya as staff numbers have increased and a new structure has been put in place. These are very important times for FOLK as the new structure will facilitate the programmes that have developed over the past ten years to spread further into the district.
Some of the new staff will be familiar faces to volunteers who have been to Kenya and more are new faces – FOL Ireland extend a Cead Mile Failte to all of them. Pictured here from left to right are – Richard, Debra, Salim, Anna, Edwin, Reuben, Chela, Nora, John and Carol and in front are Reuben, Stephen & Simon
Girls 4 Girls news from Kenya
Girls in Londiani often miss school one week of every month when they have their period as they do not have access to affordable sanitary products. The Girls 4 Girls campaign states that "We believe that no girl should ever miss a day of school because of access to affordable, hygienic sanitary products." This programme has 5 core principles - sustainability, educational opportunities, hygiene and sanitation, cost-effective, environmentally friendly. It is linked with the FOL Healthy Schools Programme and 3 schools have been running the pilot programme for the past 12 months. Early in March, 17 new schools from across the District attended a training on the Girls for Girls programme, and will work together to roll out the programme over the coming months. This training was facilitated by volunteers from Australia, Lebanon and USA. These volunteers have been central to putting the Girls 4 Girls campaign together and are joined by other volunteers from around the world making this a truly global project with FOL.
Dublin Obstetrics Visiting Society visits Londiani
A team of 14 members of Dublin Obstetrics Visiting Society (DOVs) visited Kericho County at the end of January. They visited Kericho District Hospital, Ndubusat Dispensary and Londiani District Hospital.
Members of the team also carried out a Essential Obstetric and Neonatal Training course for the Londiani District Hospital Staff
It was a great opportunity for the volunteers to experience health care in a rural setting.
