Better Together video competition
We already have more than 1,000 votes for the FOL video in this competition! FOL is now fourth in its category and in the running to win one of the three €3,000 cash prizes in this competition. But to be in with a chance, we need you and your friends to keep voting – today and every day!
FOL has until November 19th to get as many votes as possible for our entry. The ten videos with the most votes in each category (large, medium and small/voluntary) will be shortlisted, and a panel of independent judges will select a single winner from each category. The winners will be announced at the Better Together Awards on December 6th.
Better Together is a nationwide campaign to build public support for hundreds of community, voluntary and charitable organisations across the country.
FOL would really appreciate your support in helping us to win a cash prize. Remember that you can vote once a day between now and November 19th. Ask all your friends to do the same and help bring us up to third or even second place!
PLEASE VOTE NOW!

Gift vouchers – a special appeal from Kenya
As well as a year to celebrate, 2012 has been a challenging year in Kenya, both for FOL and the people of Londiani and Kipkelion Districts. The reason? Weather conditions. The rains started in April this year and have not let up yet. The effect has not just been to delay FOL projects on the ground. The adverse conditions could mean that yields of the main crop that so many people depend on – maize – will be lower than normal. That will affect communities and could also mean that FOL will have to support a lot more work in 2013.
As this is the time of year that we are deciding on our education bursary allocations for 2013, demand may be greater than usual for educational support from the communities in Londiani and Kipkelion. The FOL Christmas shop has a range of gift vouchers available for a minimum donation of €10 including one for education bursaries. The vouchers are 'dressed up' for Christmas and come with a beaded star or tree Christmas tree decoration. Just €50 will help a student to attend secondary school in 2013. Please support the gift voucher sales. They would be a great gift for someone who graduated this year, someone who just started school or moved from primary to secondary school or a teacher – or just someone who loves to collect unusual Christmas tree decorations.
FOL launches its 2012 Starfish jewellery!
To celebrate the end of our tenth year of community partnerships – and as a way of marking the start of the next ten years – Friends of Londiani has produced an exclusive piece of jewellery for you – with a little help from Don O Mahony, Master Engraver and Jeweller.
A lot of readers will know the starfish story; it has certainly motivated many of the 400 volunteers who have travelled to Kenya with us over the last ten years – and now it has inspired this wonderful piece of jewellery.
FOL is delighted to team up with Don O Mahony, who handcrafted the starfish in his Cork workshop. Each starfish is made from sterling silver and can come as a chain or bracelet. The silver starfish is presented in a handmade banana-fibre box made in Kenya. The box is another link to the starfish story and Kenya. The designer James Njoroge makes them in his workshop in Nairobi. He is delighted to be able to partner with FOL and offer his products to people in Ireland.
Don O Mahony has also designed a very special enamelled piece which shows the starfish both on the sand and in the sea. It's a beautiful way to commemorate the tenth year of our partnerships between Ireland and Kenya and will be made to order.
The jewellery is also set to be a big hit on social media sites thanks to two girls from Northern Ireland, Rian and Rose Connolly. The girls have designed a video and comic strip to accompany the story and Dublin-based band the Frames have given permission for their song 'Star Star' to be used in the video.
In FOL, we believe, we can all Make A Difference – and this jewellery can help us do just that. Each piece – a bracelet or necklace – will not only make a beautiful Christmas present but the proceeds from its sale will help to make a difference to the lives of children in Londiani.
Prices for these exclusive sterling silver pieces begin at €50. Order now and we will deliver by registered post within three weeks. They can also be collected from the FOL office.
There are many options available – including silver chains, coloured leather necklaces and hemp bracelets. Each one is made to order – so get in touch now!.

Rather than printing and posting cards this Christmas, why not send an e-card, and support FOL at the same time? Friends of Londiani will provide you with an online card personalised with your company name and message. In return we ask for a donation of €50 which will help enable a child in Londiani to attend school for 2013. For €50 you can send as many e-cards as you like!
Order your personalised e-card any time from now until December 16th by contacting email@example.com. Your card will be emailed back to you within five days, for you to email to all your clients and customers.
Celebrations in Kenya
On November 15th, members of the communities that FOL works with will gather in Londiani town for a celebration of FOL's ten years of community partnerships. They will be joined by Kenyan FOL staff, representatives of the Ministries for Health, Education and Water & Sanitation, Irish volunteers on Harambee projects, members of the Mayo General Link team and many more friends and supporters who have been involved over the past ten years. It will be a great celebration in true Kenyan style with plenty of singing, dancing and fine words!
Even the FOL office in Midleton will take part! The office will be open house on that day from 2pm to 9pm to showcase the Christmas shop and the new Starfish Sterling Silver Jewellery, and the staff hope to Skype in at various times during the day – and even join in the festivities. As the Kenyans would say: Feel welcome!
