Never has the risk to adolescents been so high in the communities we work with as it is today. Incidents of sexual violence have jumped by 70% which has increased the risk of HIV and unwanted pregnancy. It is estimated that 33% of girls in Kenya have been raped by the time they reach the age of 18, with 22% of girls aged 15-19 describing their first experience of sexual intercourse as forced.
With 63% of the population in Kericho county aged 25 and under, this is one enormous section of the population facing three threats – gender-based violence, HIV, and teenage pregnancy.
